The reporter asked a lady on her 105th birthday, "What's the secret to living such a long life?" She smiled and said, "The secret is to keep breathing." Now, that might sound simple, but there's profound wisdom in her words. It's not just about the physical act of breathing; it's about the breath of life, the breath of God that sustains us each and every day.
The Bible tells us in John 20:22 that when Jesus appeared to His disciples, He breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit." What a powerful moment that must have been! That wasn’t just any breath; it was the breath of life, a breath of peace, a breath that filled them with courage, strength, and the presence of God. When we breathe in His presence, His Spirit fills us. It calms the stormy waters in our hearts, gives us strength when we feel weak, and brings peace when everything around us feels chaotic.
But there are other kinds of breathing, too. In Acts 9:1, it says, "Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord..." He was breathing out anger, resentment, and frustration. And isn’t it true that sometimes, if we’re not careful, we can find ourselves doing the same? Breathing out bitterness, worry, and anxiety. But friends, that’s not who we are. That’s not what we were created for.
Prophet Malachi tells us, “My covenant was with him, one of life and peace” (Malachi 2:5). That’s God’s heart for us. God’s covenant with us is one of life and peace. He wants us to enjoy our lives, to live long and strong, and to experience His peace that surpasses all understanding.
So today, take a deep breath of God's Spirit. Let go of the anxieties, the stresses, the worries. Keep breathing in His promises and exhaling your doubts. Embrace His covenant of life and peace, live it, and you’ll see His hand guiding you, comforting you, and carrying you through.
