"God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom He also made the world. And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the Word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high." (Hebrews 1:1-3)
When we are far away from our family and loved ones, we try to contact them in every possible way. Today, we communicate through mobile phones, texting, Messenger, WhatsApp, and other forms of electronic communication. Although less common today, we write cards or letters to communicate with those we love.
After humanity was banished from the Garden of Eden, where God's presence was immanent, God still desired to communicate with His creation in many ways. In the Old Testament, God spoke through the prophets in many ways, but in the New Testament, God's Word was embodied in the person of our Lord Jesus Christ. (John 1:1-5; 9-14)
The Prophets were the messengers of God, but Jesus Christ is the Only Begotten Son of God. The prophets became a part of delivering God's Word to His people, but our Lord Jesus is the perfect Word of God. The Book of Hebrews says it this way: "Through whom He also made the world. And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature and upholds all things by the word of His power." (Hebrews 1:2-3)
Indeed, God's Word is not a clear audible expression as we imagine between two human beings. His Word is a Person, a Being. Our Lord Jesus Christ is the most powerful Word ever spoken, whom we hear and accept in our hearts. Today, when we enter into communion with Him through the Eucharist and the power of the Holy Spirit, our God speaks to us in many ways with countless examples.
Therefore, when we read the Holy Scriptures, let us anticipate that God is speaking with us through His Only Begotten Son and through the power of His Holy Spirit. When we commune with the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, know that we are taking the living Word of God into our hearts, minds, bodies, and spirits so that we may live in the eternal presence of our God.
