“The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” (Psalm 18:2)
As we read this psalm the word "my" leaps off the page at us. This is not just a general statement; it’s a very personal declaration from David about his relationship with God Almighty. He’s saying, "This is who God is to me. He’s my rock, my fortress, my deliverer, my strength, my shield, my salvation, my stronghold.”
When David described the Lord as his rock, it had profound meaning. As a shepherd, David knew that often, the only place to find relief from the scorching sun in a hot, arid desert was by the shade of a rock. As a man of war, a rock represented a stronghold, a place of safety. He had also been taught that in the wilderness of the desert, for God’s people, the rock was a place of refreshment, a miraculous source of water in the desert (Exodus 17:6).
The apostle Paul, in his letter to the Corinthians, said: “and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ” (1 Corinthians 10:4). Indeed, Jesus Christ is our source, our foundation, and our strength. Just like God’s people in the Old Testament, we may face wilderness seasons—times of uncertainty, challenges, and trials. But we don't have to go through it alone. We have a Rock that follows us, a Rock that never leaves us nor forsakes us.
Maybe today, you’re facing a situation that feels overwhelming. Maybe you feel like you’re in the middle of a battle, and you’re not sure where to turn. I want to encourage you to do what David did. Make the LORD your rock. Run to Him for safety. Trust in Him for strength. Find your refuge in Him. He is unchangeable. He is reliable. He is powerful. And He loves you more than you can imagine.
